“One morning you wake up with more life behind you than in front of you, not being able to understand how it’s happened.”
So, thats it. With finishing this one I can proudly announce Ive read all of Backman’s published books. Yes, nothing can beat Beartown and Us Against You, but each of his stories has something unique about it.
Same goes for Britt Marie Was Here. If we talk about quirky characters, Backman is a master. This book is partially connected to My Grandmother… cause thats where we first meet Britt Marie as one of the side characters. She is 63, she is socially awkward, strickt in following the rules and a bit of a clean freak. She is also a woman that has been neglected by her husband and her surroundings for years and has finally decided she’s had enough.
“𝑨𝒕 𝒂 𝒄𝒆𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝒂𝒈𝒆 𝒂𝒍𝒎𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒒𝒖𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝒂 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏 𝒂𝒔𝒌𝒔 𝒉𝒊𝒎𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒇 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈: 𝒉𝒐𝒘 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒆?”
I love that he centered the story around an older woman. Being in my late 30’s I find refreshment in characters that are older than 25. I know that the most exciting stories happen when youre finding the perfect job and that right person to marry and start a life with. Having kids is definitely a whole new chapter of the story. But its not like everything stops there. And Backman sees it. He will tell the most amazing stories about people just like you and me, normal people with ordinary lives, showing the world that we all have something to tell. For him, there is so much extraordinary within the ordinary, and every person is valuable and worth knowing. I love him for his humanity, for his ability to see the goodness in everyone, for his wise words and a realistic, but at the same time positive and hopeful attitude.

If you still haven’t read any books by Backman, I have no idea what are you waiting for. Maybe you wont like them all. Maybe you wont like any of them. But I you will get to love his messages and appreciate him as an author. I’m completely sure of it.
